Weddington Middle serves sixth through eighth-grade students and is located in Matthews. We believe in a team approach with our students that promotes positive, supportive relationships between students and teachers. We offer a diverse and comprehensive range of electives and extracurricular activities. Our exceptional faculty, staff, and students set us apart. We also enjoy an active Parent Teacher Student Organization and are grateful to the many involved parents and community members.

Meet Our School Leaders

Dr. Marcus Leake (Principal)

About Dr. Leake

Dr. Leake has served the Weddington campus for nearly two decades. An assistant principal at Weddington High School for seven years, he transitioned to Weddington Middle in 2014. His career began by teaching science and math at Providence High School, and he became an administrator at Ardrey Kell High School when it opened in 2006.

Dr. Leake earned a bachelor of arts in psychology with a minor in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While teaching in Charlotte, he earned a master of school administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While at Weddington Middle, Dr. Leake earned a doctor of education in educational leadership with a concentration in the PK-12 superintendency.

Eric Grieser (Assistant Principal)

About Mr. Grieser

Mr. Grieser is entering his eighth year at Weddington Middle. Beginning in 2018, he served WMS as sixth-grade math teacher for three years before transitioning to Assistant Principal in February of 2022. Prior to UCPS, Mr. Grieser spent ten years in Cabarrus County Schools, one year in Jasper County (SC), and two years in Savannah-Chatham (GA) public school systems teaching middle school math and social studies.

Mr. Grieser earned his bachelor's degree in middle childhood education from Defiance College (OH). While teaching in Cabarrus County, he earned a master's degree in educational leadership from Wingate University.

Ronnie West (Assistant Principal)

About Mr. West

Mr. West has proudly served in public education for the past 20+ years. He received his undergraduate degree (biology) and Master of Teaching from The University of South Carolina, and his graduate degree (Educational Leadership and Supervision) from Winthrop University.

Mr. West began his teaching career in the Fort Mill School District, where he taught science for ten years while also coaching the basketball team and working with the Middle School Mock Trial Team. Mr. West then transitioned to Union County Public Schools, serving as a high school and middle school assistant principal.

Mr. West is looking forward to continuing Weddington Middle’s long record of success! Go Wildcats!

Elizabeth Gobble (Assistant Principal)

About Mrs. Gobble

Mrs. Gobble has served in education for over two decades with much of that time spent within the halls of Weddington Middle School.Beginning her career at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School in 2001, she transitioned to teaching sixth grade English at WMS in 2006 before moving back to her hometown in West Virginia and teaching for four years.Upon return to UCPS, she continued teaching at WMS until transitioning into the role of Administrator in 2018. In 2024, she was honored with the recognition of UCPS Assistant Principal of the Year.

Mrs. Gobble earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a focus in middle grades English and science.She then earned her Master of Arts in School Administration from Wingate University in 2018.
